Alcohol and Drug Rehab That Accepts Aetna Insurance

Verify Your Benefits by Phone

Under the Affordable Care Act, most insurance plans must cover 10 essential health benefits. One of those benefits is treatment for substance use disorders and other behavioral health services. If you have an ACA-compliant health plan, you can use your benefits to access treatment for drug or alcohol addiction, leading to better health.

To make treatment more accessible, Safe Haven Recovery works with many commercial health insurance providers, including Aetna. As part of the CVS Health family, Aetna offers health insurance, wellness programs and other products designed to help members take control of their health.

Aetna started as a fire insurance company, but the business grew quickly, prompting the founders to create Aetna Life Insurance Company. Eventually, Aetna started selling health insurance, setting the stage for CVS Health to acquire the company in 2018.

Today, Aetna Health Insurance offers several types of health insurance plans, including Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D, employer-sponsored health plans, and ACA-compliant individual/family plans.

Does Aetna Insurance Cover Addiction Treatment?

Aetna covers several types of addiction treatment. However, each Aetna plan is slightly different, so checking your policy details is important. Aetna often covers the following services:

This place is awesome! Great techs, great therapists, great clients, great owners, and a great chef! It went beyond my expectations, and this was my first time in rehab. Safe Haven is highly recommended by me.

Understanding Your Aetna Plan

Aetna offers several types of health insurance.

  • HMO: A health maintenance organization, better known as an HMO, is a network of providers who agree to deliver services at a discounted rate. If you have an Aetna HMO plan, you generally have to get care from providers in your network. It’s also common for an HMO to require referrals from your primary care provider if you want to see a specialist.

  • PPO: PPO stands for preferred provider organization. If you have this type of health insurance, you can see a specialist without getting a referral from your PCP. Your PPO health plan may also cover some of the cost of seeing an out-of-network provider. PPOs offer more coverage than HMOs, so they tend to have higher premiums.

  • EPO: An exclusive provider organization gives you access to a larger network than an HMO. Some EPO plans require referrals for specialists, but others don’t. Like HMOs, EPOs generally don’t cover health services delivered by out-of-network providers.

Aetna insurance covers a wide range of addiction treatment services, but many plans have cost-sharing requirements. Cost-sharing is when you pay a portion of the bill out of your own pocket. When you get care from providers in the Aetna network, you may have to meet your deductible or pay a co-pay for each service.

Deductibles and Co-Pays

Your deductible is the amount of money you must pay before your health plan starts to cover the cost of your treatment. A co-pay, or co-payment, is a flat fee you must pay for each covered service. It’s common for Aetna and other insurers to require co-pays for office visits and prescription medications.

Out-of-Pocket Maximums

Although your plan may have some cost-sharing requirements, it also has an annual out-of-pocket maximum. This is the maximum amount of money you’ll need to spend per year to get addiction treatment and other types of health care. For example, if you have an out-of-pocket maximum of $3,000, you won’t spend more than $3,000 in any given year.

Coverage Limits

It’s also important to familiarize yourself with any coverage limits imposed by your Aetna insurance plan. Under the Affordable Care Act, compliant plans can’t have annual or lifetime spending limits for essential medical services. However, they can have annual or lifetime dollar limits on nonessential services.

Aetna-Covered Addiction Services at Safe Haven Recovery

Safe Haven Recovery works with Aetna and its affiliated companies to provide the following addiction treatment services:

In-Network vs Out-of-Network Coverage

If Safe Haven Recovery is part of your Aetna network, you’ll pay less for addiction treatment than you would if you chose an out-of-network provider. This is because in-network providers agree to offer services at a contracted rate. Out-of-network providers don’t accept the same rates, so it costs more to use an out-of-network provider for the same services.

Understanding each provider’s network status is critical for minimizing out-of-pocket costs. If you’re not sure what your plan covers, contact Aetna by telephone. Make sure your member ID is available when you call. You can also check your plan documents for information on in-network vs. out-of-network coverage.

Preauthorization and Medical Necessity

Preauthorization, or prior authorization, helps Aetna determine if services are medically necessary. A service is a medical necessity if it diagnoses, treats, or relieves the symptoms of a disease or health condition.

Safe Haven Recovery helps with preauthorization by submitting a precertification request via telephone, provider website, or electronic data interchange. We’ll also submit medical documentation to support your need for addiction treatment.

Aetna employees review this documentation and use it to determine coverage. Completing the preauthorization process helps us determine if your Aetna plan will cover your stay, making treatment more accessible without increasing out-of-pocket costs.

Aetna Policy Limitations and Exclusions

Although Aetna covers addiction treatment, the company offers a variety of plans, some of which have a higher level of coverage. It’s important to understand your plan’s limitations and exclusions before you use your benefits.

One common limitation is the number of days of treatment covered. Your plan may cover as little as 30 or as many as 90 days. Many plans also have session caps, or limits on the number of treatment sessions covered each year.

Some plans even have step-down requirements, which make you transition to a different level of care once your condition improves. For example, you may have to step down to outpatient treatment after completing 30 days of inpatient rehab.

Our admissions team has experience working with all types of Aetna insurance coverage, so feel free to contact us if you need help understanding your policy’s limitations and exclusions.

Aetna Rehab Coverage FAQs

Does Aetna cover dual-diagnosis addiction treatment at Safe Haven Recovery?

Yes. Aetna plans generally cover treatment for both substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions, when medically necessary and provided by an in-network provider.

At Safe Haven Recovery in Beverly Hills, CA, our dual-diagnosis program is designed to meet those criteria — combining clinical detox, therapy, and psychiatric care.

Aetna typically covers multiple levels of care including:

  • Medically supervised detox (inpatient)

  • Residential/inpatient treatment for addiction and dual diagnosis

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) formats

  • Outpatient therapy and ongoing mental-health support

As Safe Haven Recovery specializes in medically-supervised detox, residential treatment, and dual diagnosis, Aetna should cover a significant percentage of treatment costs. Call us at (855) 893-3566 to verify your benefits now.

You should verify the following:

  • Whether Safe Haven Recovery is in-network for your specific Aetna plan (in-network usually leads to greater coverage).

  • Whether the services are deemed medically necessary according to your plan’s criteria.

  • Whether pre-authorization or referral from a primary care provider is required.

  • Your plan’s deductible, co-insurance, out-of-pocket maximums, and what portion you’ll be responsible for.

Our admissions team can help you verify your benefits. Simply call us at (855) 893-3566 or fill out our online insurance verification form.

Yes. Aetna recognizes the concept of dual diagnosis (co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders) and provides coverage for integrated treatment.

The key is that both conditions are addressed simultaneously in a coordinated program like the one at Safe Haven, boosting chances for long-term recovery.

Coverage depends. While Aetna covers evidence-based addiction and mental-health services, some luxury amenities or non-essential upgrades (e.g., private villa style, gourmet meals) may not be fully covered.

Safe Haven Recovery offers medically-focused dual diagnosis care in a high-end environment. We recommend verifying which services are considered “core treatment” by Aetna versus “amenity upgrades.”

Many treatments can begin fast once the insurance verification is completed. Safe Haven’s admissions team can assist in contacting Aetna, verifying benefits, and getting pre-authorization. It often takes just a few hours to initiate the process provided foundational paperwork is ready.

Tip: Having your member ID, plan name, and treatment level (detox/residential) will speed up the verification.

Your out-of-pocket cost will depend on your specific plan type (HMO/PPO), deductible status, what level of care you’re in (detox vs outpatient), and whether Safe Haven Recovery is in-network. Some plans may cover most or all of the clinical services; amenities or non-essential items may have cost share.

Safe Haven Recovery’s admissions team can help you estimate your responsibility before you commit.

If Aetna limits the number of days (or refuses longer stays), Safe Haven Recovery will work with you to create a step-down care plan (e.g., moving from residential to IOP or outpatient) that aligns with your clinical needs and maximizes your coverage period. Highlighting continuity of care helps meet Aetna’s criteria.

Yes. For detox, you may need prior authorization or proof of medical necessity (especially for dual-diagnosis cases).

For MAT, many Aetna plans cover approved medications (e.g., for opioid use disorder) and associated supportive therapy when the provider is in-network.

Call our admissions team at (855) 893-3566 or submit the online insurance verification form. Provide your Aetna member ID and plan information.

We’ll contact Aetna on your behalf, verify coverage, outline recommended levels of care (detox → residential → aftercare), and let you know your out-of-pocket cost estimate — all confidentially.
